the end of days

if the world is gonna end, then i think i’m in pretty good shape.

i’ve been in a bubble recently. my lefty-leaning, rural life, tiny cottage bubble. i’m writing a new album. and finally feeling like i’m getting somewhere. i’m remembering i know how to do this (it has after all been almost 20 years i’ve been at making up songs). i’m building a little momentum. i’ve given myself a deadline to put some sounds down on tape (!).

but i thought i would take a moment out of this process to lift my nose from the grindstone and address a current issue: the end of days.  indeed, it seems, according to more than a few folks, that judgement day is near. in fact, it’s less than a week away.

which brings to mind my friend jill sobule’s song about the rapture.

    What if I’ve been
    A really nice gal
Followed the Golden Rule, but now
Because I don’t believe in your best pal
    You say I’ll burn forever?

    But let’s say he’s real
    But not like you sell
He’s more like the nice hippie in Godspell
Well, I’d think that he was swell
    Would that bum you out?

You were busy gettin’ ready for the rapture
    For the rapture
    For the rapture
You were busy gettin’ ready for the rapture, warning us all

or a favorite snarky bumper sticker that i first saw stuck on the cash register of my hometown music store, probably when i was 13 or 14 years old:

                   jesus is coming. look busy!

oh jesus. i am busy! and feeling pretty good about it, too. who knows if the world ends this weekend (what a shame we’ll never know if the redsox take the series) or in 2012, like the mayans say. or whenever. but really if it ended today, the people in my life that i love, they know it. i do my best, and more and more often, to help others. i think i’ve written a few really wonderful songs and seen quite a bit of the world.

this is not to toot my own horn, it’s just to say that if part of “judgement day” is to get us to consider how we live our lives, i’m grateful for the perspective.

quick! here he comes!
